Introduction
Good morning, church! You know it's funny but every time I come up here I'm always tempted to say, ''Hey guys, how's everyone doing?'' which, honestly, would just be such a dumb thing to say, right? Because, for one, there's a lot of you and only one of me, and so it's not like I could actually hear your response. But second, when someone on stage asks that question of an audience, who in the audience is then going to answer that question honestly? Like who among us, while seated in the middle of a couple hundred people is going to be like, 'Well actually Patrick, things are really tough right now. Let me tell you what's going on.' No! No one's going to answer like that in this setting. Instead, I'll get up and ask, 'How are you guys doing?' and then a bunch of loud extroverts will shout back 'Good!' And we'll have ended up going through this big superficial meaningless ritual where we've said a bunch of things without really thinking about what we've said.
Now I think this is something very common among people as a whole, but I don't know, if I can pick on us Christians for a second, I think we in particular are really guilty of often saying things or using certain ''Christian'' words without ever really thinking about what we're saying. I'll give you an example of what I mean:
About a year ago Teresa and I met this awesome family in our neighborhood who had just moved to area. They had a daughter about Charley's age and so it was a perfect fit. They didn't go to church, and had grown up in a Catholic/Orthodox background, so they were admittedly a little nervous about coming to have dinner at a Baptist pastor's house, but they were brave, Teresa and the wife had really hit it off, and so why not give it a try. So, Teresa and this other woman set up a date, made all the plans and we were good to go with them coming over. A couple of days beforehand, Teresa check ...
