No one enjoys the process of testing. Teachers don't like grading tests, students don't like taking tests, parents don't like the negative results of tests - but testing is a necessary part of education.
For example, tests can reveal your ability to absorb knowledge, your apacity to memorize information ... and creativity when ability and memorization skills take a leave of absence.
RC Sproul tells about a student who wrote a note on his exam:
''I'm sorry I did so poorly on your test. However, I want you to know that Jesus Christ is my Savior, and I have been blessed by your lectures.''
Sproul replied: ''I'm happy for your relationship with Jesus Christ. In the kingdom of God you will be justified by faith. However, in my class the Old Testament system of works is still the standard. Your faith gets an 'A.' Your exam rates an 'F'!''
We're in a new series called Life Verses. A Life Verse is your favorite, ''go to'' verse. This weeks' verses were submitted anonymously. Both of them! Out of 46 verses, these are the only anonymous verses.
In James the Lord's little brother encourages us to take a test:
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,
3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.
4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
The second Life Verse is from 1 Peter 5 ...
4 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you, making you strong, firm and steadfast.
Although I have faced a number of setbacks, I have never heard a Dr. say, ''You have cancer.'' I've never had divorce papers served by an attorney, and no banker has called in a loan for default.
