Jude 5-7

Let's open our bibles to the small, but significant NT book of Jude. This is the third message in our series called 'Contend', and today we'll be diving into verses 5-7.

This week I read a story about a Major League Umpire back in the 60's named Marty Springstead. Marty was umpiring behind the plate for the very first time in the major leagues. Up to the plate stepped big Frank Howard. Frank was not only a huge star in the league, but was a hulk of a man at 6-7 and 240 pounds. The first pitch to Howard was a knee-high fast ball right over the plate. Springstead called it strike one. Howard was furious and shouted at the rookie umpire, ''I don't know where you came from or how you got to the major leagues, but you better get something straight, buster! Here in the Bigs, they don't call that pitch a strike on me. Understand?''

Well, the very next pitch was a knee-high fastball in the exact same location. Marty Springstead turned and yelled, ''Two!'' Frank Howard turned and roared, 'Two what?'' And Marty Springstead hollered, ''Too low. Much, much too low.''

If you live long enough, you'll eventually find yourself in situations where your beliefs and your convictions are challenged by others. And it's in those moments you have to make a decision: Do I stand strong or do I compromise? Do I defend my beliefs or do I defer to the views of others?

The book of Jude is a call to every Christian and every Christian church to take a strong, uncompromising stance for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Please understand this is not permission to be mean, or hateful, or violent, or arrogant, or condescending, or prideful. We are to humbly, but wholeheartedly, stand firm on God's Word and hold tight to the Gospel.

Before we move forward let me give you a couple reminders.
