Jonah 3
Turn to Jonah 3. I read a weird story this week that appeared in the USA Today Newspaper a few years ago. I've got the article here in my hand. It's a story about a dog that gave its owner the Heimlich maneuver. Sounds suspicious, doesn't it? And, of course, that's how a lot of people think about the story of Jonah.
It sounds suspicious. But let me tell you about this story. A 45-year-old woman by the name of Debbie Parkhurst from Calvert, Maryland was eating an apple and she got a slice stuck in her throat. She was coughing, choking couldn't get it out. She said she put her arms around herself trying to give herself the Heimlich, but to no avail.
Her two-year-old Golden Retriever named Toby was right beside her watching the whole thing. She collapsed to the ground, and then, she explained how Toby, with his paws, pushed her shoulders down, and began jumping up and down on her chest. This dislodged the apple; and saved her life. Debbie even said she had bruises on her chest that were the shape of paw-prints.
That's the first time I've ever heard of a dog giving a human the Heimlich maneuver, but it was in the paper so it's got to be true. Well, maybe not. But the story of Jonah is in the Bible, so it DOES have to be true. Jesus Himself said the story of Jonah was true. And just like that dog saved that woman's life, a huge fish saved Jonah's life.
In the middle of it all, Jonah might have thought it was a terrible thing, but God actually put him in solitary confinement to save his life and to get his eyes back on the Lord. Last week, we ended chapter two by seeing that this whale vomits Jonah back on to the shore, and there's probably a sign that says: ''Nineveh That Way''.
Today, we're actually going to see the greatest miracle of the book. The biggest miracle is not the big fish in chapter two; it's the phenomenal revival in chapter 3. We're going to see that every single pe ...
