Jonah 4
Turn to the book of Jonah. If you have had young child, you've probably read the popular children's book called Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst. It's about a little boy whose day starts out bad and goes downhill from there. He gets gum in his hair, gets his sweater wet in the sink, he trips over his skateboard, and doesn't get a prize in his cereal box - and that's all before breakfast!
He could tell right away that it was going to be a TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY. Then he goes to school and his teacher doesn't like his drawing of an invisible castle, he doesn't get a dessert in his lunch bag, and his best friend doesn't want to be his best friend anymore. And after school his mom buys him plain white sneakers instead of the cool ones with red and blue racing stripes, his dentist finds a cavity in his tooth, there are lima beans for dinner, and he gets soap in his eyes when he takes his evening bath. BAD!
Finally in frustration he says, ''I think I'll move to Australia.'' Of course, we all can relate. We've all had days...
-When people treat us unfairly.
-When nothing works out the way we want it to.
-When we look around at what we went thru and what has happened just makes us plain mad.
Do you still have days like that? Yeah, don't lie in church.
Well, chapter four begins with Jonah thinking he has just experienced one of those days. He's having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. And he's angry. He's livid. But he's angry at things or people. No, the target of his fury is God. You know why he's mad at God? He's mad at God for...being God. We'll get into that a little deeper in a moment.
Now, I don't know about you, but I don't like the ending of this story. I really don't. It's not happy. It's not resolved. It's not pretty. It's not funny. In my humble opinion, it stinks. It's ...
