Ruth 1:1-6
I'm excited to invite you this morning to open your bibles to the book of Ruth. If you don't know where that is go to front of your bible, go forward 8 books, and boom...there's Ruth. How many of you have already read Ruth? Good. We still have a few of you who are Ruthless. Hahaha. Over the next six weeks I'm going to give you the Ruth, the whole Ruth, and nothing but the Ruth!
Ruth is one of only two books in the bible named after a woman. Can you name the other? Esther. Very Good! Though both were women, their lives and stories were very different.
- Ruth was a Gentile married to a Jew. Esther was a Jew married to a Gentile.
- Ruth lived in a foreign land because she chose to. Esther lived in a foreign land because she was forced to.
- Ruth begins with famine and ends with a birth. Esther begins with a feast and ends with death.
But Both Ruth and Esther teach us that it doesn't matter who you are, it doesn't matter where your from, it doesn't matter how powerless you feel, it doesn't matter the circumstances you find yourself in, it doesn't even matter how far you have fallen...the God of heaven hasn't forgotten you. He is full of forgiveness. He is completely trustworthy. And He is faithful even when we are faithless.
In fact, there are two major themes throughout the book of Ruth:
1. The PROVIDENCE of God.
Do you know what the word 'providence' means? PRO: ''before'' and VIDEO: ''to see''.
So providence means to see something before it happens, and to provide for what is seen. You can also hear the word ''provide'' in the word providence. So the providence of God means that God sees every event of every persons life long before it occurs, and He provides whatever is needed and necessary to makes sure those events fit into His plan to make you who desires you to be. Often you can't see, but you don't have to because He does.
