Ruth 4
Let's open our bibles to Ruth 4. Remember that old TV show 'Kids say the Darnedest Things'? It's true. Kids really do say the darnedest things. Last Sunday, I was here in the worship center visiting with a mom and her two little girls after the second service. We were the last ones left and we were all just kind of talking and having fun. The younger of the two girls, a sweet little five-year-old, looked at me and said, ''Pastor Bob, you know what I dream about sometimes.'' I said, ''What's that?'' She said, ''Kissing you!'' Three grueling years of seminary did not prepare me to answer a question like that.
I said, ''Well, why in the world do you dream about that?'' She said incredulously, ''Because I'm in LOVE with you!'' Fortunately, her mom said, ''Well sweetie, Pastor Bob is already married. You can't marry him.'' She very quickly replied, ''I don't want to marry him; I just want to kiss him.''
I thought later maybe I should have asked her if she ever lived in Moab.
Remember in elementary school when you wanted to tease your friend about liking someone and you'd say: 'Johnny and Susie sittin' in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes LOVE, then comes MARRIAGE, then comes the BABY in baby carriage.' Well, our text today doesn't say anything about kissing, but we certainly see love, and marriage, and a baby. And we will see that they come in that order as well.
Now, before we dive back into the details of the story of Ruth, let me remind you that the book of Ruth reflects what the whole Bible is about. This little story in Scripture mirrors the big story of Scripture. In fact, while Ruth is four chapters, the big story of the Bible can be summarized in 4 words.
1) Creation: God created a perfect world for people to live in close communion and complete joy in the presence of their Maker. People were created to love God and one another ...
