Welcome to our brand-new series called ''Our House.'' God is omnipresent. He is everywhere at all times, but God's desire is to dwell with His people.
God dwelled with His people in the Old Testament. He was present with them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. He instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle according to His specifications in order that He may dwell with them. He instructed David and Solomon how to build the Temple in order that His presence may be with them.
God delivered His people out of Egyptian bondage and slavery, and put them on a journey to come into the Promised Land. In so doing, He led His people through a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
Exodus 13:21 And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. 22 He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.
Then God instructed Moses to build the Tabernacle which would be their meeting place. God has always had a dwelling place amid His people. It was first in the tabernacle, and later in the Old Testament period it was in the temple.
2 Samuel 7:1 Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies all around, 2 that the king said to Nathan the prophet, ''See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.'' 3 Then Nathan said to the king, ''Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.'' 4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 ''Go and tell My servant David, 'Thus says the Lord: ''Would you build a house for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but ...
