Living in Certainty in an Uncertain World
William Wyne
Hebrews 11: 8-10
8By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
We are living in uncertain times in this world and this country. Each waking day, one holds their breath just to see what and how much foolishness and divisive dissension will be in the headlines of the day. We are not sure whether we will be at war or peace because of the instability of pitiful, petty, power hungry leaders who want to flex their political muscles. We live in uncertain times. There are those who have toiled for years in the workplace, and in retirement, they wonder if they have enough in those years to live the good life, the rewarded life of working without wondering whether they have enough. We live in uncertain times.
Someone has said that there is no such thing as a sure thing. We live in so much uncertainty that even when we try to be certain, and we do that which we believe is certain, we are uncertain if we have tried hard enough. As another says, the only thing that you can be sure of is that you are not as sure about the only thing that you are sure of.
And then on the other side is that Benjamin Franklin statement, that the only sure thing in life is death and taxes. Well, there is some truth to that, but then there is a biblical event that will happen and nullifies that idea of death for some. When Christ comes, there will be those who will not die, as we know death. But the bible says they will be caught up, translated, bypass that normal way of exiting the world. And we are not sure when that will happen, but we know that the bible says it will.
