Obadiah
''Pride goeth before the fall'' (Proverbs 16:18, KJV). The Message reads, ''First pride, then the crash. The bigger the ego, the harder the fall.''
John Sedgwick was a Union General during the Civil War. Before the Battle of the Wilderness he spoke to his troops. He stood near a lookout point and his officers reminded him that the Confederates were close by.
But Sedgwick refused and disregarded their advice! ''Nonsense!'' he shouted. ''Those rebels couldn't hit an elephant from ...!'' Sedgwick fell to the ground, fatally wounded, the first casualty of the Battle of the Wilderness. Over-confidence is a dangerous thing!
I heard about a pastor who visiting a 98-year-old member in the nursing home. She complained, ''My arthritis is so bad I can't lift my coffee cup. My cataracts are so bad I can't see my cup of coffee. My blood pressure is so bad I can't drink coffee. But thank goodness, pastor, I can still drive!''
We're in a series called Route 66 - and we're Taking a Roadtrip Through the Bible. Your Bible has an Old and New Testament. The Old Testament has four sections: Law, History, Poetry and Prophecy. Obadiah is the fourth of twelve Minor Prophets.
Obadiah teaches us that pride and self-confidence deceives. This morning I want to look at the man and the book, delve into the history, and then recognize their sinful past.
I. The Man and His Book
So what do we know about Obadiah? In one word, ''Nothing!'' At the risk of offending all the English teachers, we don't know nothin' about Obadiah!
Obadiah is one of many Obadiah's in the Bible. Obadiah means, ''Servant of God,'' but it's a very common name. The introduction simply says, ''The vision of Obadiah'' (verse 1). For an unknown reason, God kept Obadiah anonymous.
