Where It All Begins (2 of 66)
Series: Route 66: A Road Trip Through the Bible
Tony Thomas
Genesis
One of my favorite shows is Who Do You Think You Are? It's a show about the rich and the famous who research their family trees, often with surprising/unexpected results. WDYTYA appeared on NBC for three seasons, and it's been on TLC ever since.
The celebrities have included football star Emmitt Smith, movie actress Brooke Shields, country singer Tim McGraw, TV food-personality Paula Deen and writer J.K. Rowling.
My interest in the show coincided with a search of my own family roots. We logged onto www.ancestry.com and www.myheritage.com and we gave each other DNA tests on our birthdays. We're trying to pass on an appreciation for our ancestors to our children and grandchildren.
When it comes to our faith, our ancestry goes all the way back to Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis. We're in a new series called Route 66: A Road Trip Through the Bible. I posted a picture of the logo Duane picked out for this series on Facebook and Sherry Swank added a comment: ''Are we there yet?''
Route 66 is a famous highway that was built in the 20s. It linked east with west and it covered eight states. Here's a picture of Route 66 outside of Miami, OK, my home town. Like Route 66, there are 66 books in the Bible.
We're gonna spend one Sunday on each Bible book (with the exception of 1-2 Chronicles). Most of the messages will be on CD, or you can listen online (www.whcc.us) and Duane posts my notes on the church app. We're asking you to read one book each week and if you keep up, you will read through the entire Bible in 15-18 months.
Last week I mentioned four main Bible doctrines:
1. Revelation: God imparting his truth to us.
2. Inspiration: man receiving and recording God's truth.
3. Illumination: the Holy Spirit disclosing his truth.
4. Application: putting God's Word into practice.
Today we're in Genesis: - so open your Bibles to Genesis:
