A Tragic Pilgrimage (5 of 66)
Series: Route 66: A Road Trip Through the Bible

Every Christian makes a pilgrimage, a journey from immaturity to maturity. For some of you, it has been exciting and fulfilling. For others, you'd rather not talk about it. It's been a pilgrimage marked by pain, doubt, disappointment and struggle.
Arliss Ruth Benham was born in 1920 in Bangor, Michigan. She graduated as her high school's Valedictorian, graduated with honors at North Central Bible Institute in Minneapolis, MN and retired at the age of 70 from Kellogg's.
But she also had a part-time gig: she played organ/piano at the First Baptist Church in Coldwater, Michigan. And she didn't stop playing until the age of 86! Benham was also the mother of two, wonderful Christian children!
Arlis Benham lived the kind of life that most of us would envy. But I skipped over part of her pilgrimage. She married while in Bible College but after 35 years, her pastor/husband left her and their kids for another woman. She was left to pick up the pieces and wonder, ''Why?''
You can read her story in her book titled, Long Way Back (a used copy is available on amazon.com for $9.74). What does one do when the love of your life finds love somewhere else? What do you tell the kids? How do you recover when your world crashes?
In her book she writes these words:
''I would like to be able to say that time, and God, have healed all my wounds, that there are no more sleepless nights, that grief no longer overwhelms but that would not be honest. What I now realize is that my wounds are not mortal. God's presence is very close on those sleepless nights. The goal and purpose of my life is the intense desire to help others when similar problems confront them. When my husband left I thought I'd never be able to write again, but that was not true.''
