2 Kings revolves around one universal principle of life: persistent sin may be forgiven, but its consequences cannot be erased.

As Christians, we have the promise that our sins are forgiven, but we still bear the penalty of our actions. One of my brother's is a recovering alcoholic and he has walked faithfully with the Lord since 1992. That's 25 years! I'm really super proud of him! But (don't you hate those conjunctions?), there is a persistent pull that he has to overcome every single day!

That is true for every other sin that addicts us to its pleasure: drugs, sexual fantasies, gambling and food. Every character weakness is a flaw that Satan exploits. We can be forgiven, but its pull is a daily battle!

Here are several passages to think about. Listen to the words of Elaphaz in Job 4:

7 (Living Bible) Experience teaches that it is those who sow sin and trouble who harvest the same.

Paul reminded the Galatians of this same truth:

6:7 Whatever a man sows, that shall he also reap!
8 If he sows to please evil desires, he will plant seeds of evil and reap a harvest of spiritual decay.
8b But if he plants the good things of the Spirit, he will reap everlasting life.

I loved the video clip this morning because it illustrates the positive aspect of sowing and reaping. You choose the seeds which you plant. One seed will result in a harvest of spiritual decay, while the other seed results in everlasting life. That's a choice you make every single day!

In 1 Kings, Rehoboam and Jeroboam both made bad choices. Rehoboam's bad choice divided the nation. And Jeroboam's first decision was the introduction of idol worship, establishing a precedent Israel could not shake!
