Reading through the Bible is kind of like driving coast-to-coast: it's one thing to plan it; it's another thing to do it! Before the days of the internet and phone apps, you had to actually buy a map to plan your vacation! Remember those?
We did that in 1976 when I was a Youth Minister in Ohio. The North American Christian Convention was being held in Denver, CO. We took sixteen kids on a two-week odyssey to show them the western wonders of the United States (and to compete in Bible Bowl at the NACC).
We drove to Oklahoma and my parents fed us that first night. We ate dinner the next day at the Big Texan in Amarillo, Texas (if you ate a 64 oz. steak you didn't have to pay for it!), we visited the White Sands of Alamogordo in New Mexico, we drove to Arizona to see the Petrified Forest, Carl's Bad Caverns and the Grand Canyon.
Then we headed north to see Hoover Dam, and one week later we arrived in downtown Las Vegas and we looked like the Beverly Hillbillies! But there was more to come: in Colorado we visited the Air Force Academy, ate dinner at the Flying W Ranch, heard the Impact Brass and Singers at the Red Rock Amphitheater and walked across the Royal Gorge Bridge.
That bridge is 1,053' above the Arkansas River! At the time it was the highest suspension bridge in the world. The wooden walkway consists of 1,295 wooden planks, and it would cost $15 million to build in today's dollars.
We had one kid on the trip who had never been out of the states of Indiana or Ohio named Wayne Beard. Wayne was really smart, but shy, and he was keeping a journal. He never shared with anyone what he was writing and, naturally, I was curious. That night after everyone fell asleep I opened Wayne's journal and nearly fell out of the camper laughing: ''Today, I spit a mile!''
