We're in a series called Route 66 - and we're taking a Roadtrip Through the Bible. This is Week No. 15, we're in Ezra - and Ezra takes a stand! Ezra was a priest who led God's people home after 70 years of captivity in Babylon.

The purpose for their return was to rebuild the Temple, but God was more interested in rebuilding their faith. William Barclay calls this the ''to-be principle.'' Before God calls you to-do something, he calls you to-be something first.

So far in our journey, we have covered the five Books of Law, and nine of the twelve Books of History. By way of review ...

1. Genesis told the story of the patriarchs ...
2. Exodus-Joshua told the story of two deliverers ...
3. Judges reveals eleven men and one woman who judged ...
4. And the six Double Books tell about the Kings.

In 1 Samuel, Israel transitions from judges to kings:

1. 2 Samuel tells the story of David's life.
2. In 1 Kings, there was Civil War and a divided nation.
3. In 2 Kings, Israel and Judah are taken captive.
4. In 1-2 Chronicles, the Babylonian captives return.

We cannot possibly imagine what it was like to have a foreign power invade, to be evicted from our homes, to be deported to a foreign land and to learn a new language and blend into a new culture.

But that's what Nebuchadnezzar did to the Jews! Today, we're jumping ahead 50 years. Nebuchadnezzar and Babylon area dead and gone. There's a new sheriff in town named Cyrus the Great (not Peyton Manning), and Cyrus conquered what is now Iran and Iraq - and the Persians are ruling.

And with that brief review, we're almost ready to study Ezra. But ... I want to warn you that Ezra says some difficult things today. Without being melodramatic, this might be the most controversial message you will ever hear.
