We're in a series called Route 66 - and we're taking a Roadtrip Through the Bible. This is Week No. 17 which means that we have covered one-third of the Bible. Today we're in Esther, the last historical book.
For the most part, the Bible follows the lives of men, and we can trace the history of civilization through leadership: there are Patriarchs, Deliverers, Judges and Kings. The Old Testament was a paternalistic world. There are some notable exceptions: Deborah is the lone, female judge, Athaliah is the lone female Queen), and Ruth is David's grandmother.
Today though, we're focusing our thoughts on a woman. Honestly, I'm not sure I'm the right person to do this! I have an adopted mother, a birth mother and a mother-in law. I have three sisters, three daughters and three granddaughters. I've been married for 42 years, I have 32 female employees, but I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to women!
According to my adopted mother, it's easier to raise boys than girls. Had the girls come first there wouldn't have been boys! A boy plays all day. He buys a truck at 16. He chases girls til he catches one and he wings it the rest of his life!
I drove to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis on Tuesday to visit Paul Myers and walked straight to the elevators. I pressed the up button and when the door opened there was an elevator full of African-American women! There were ten of them and they were all talking until I stepped inside.
One of them said, ''Sir, you would mind closing the door?'' I assured them I wouldn't mind at all but when I reached to shut the door I accidentally opened it! I apologized and said, ''I don't know what went wrong!''
The oldest of the women said, ''A man just got on the elevator!'' And then they all started laughing! I could feel my face flush red! The redder I got the more they laughed!
