Open your hymnal ... to Psalms! Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the first Temple in 587 BC. The Romans destroyed the second Temple in 70 AD. Everything about Solomon's Temple is gone, with the exception of the hymnbook ... Psalms.

The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in 1956. This is an image of the Psalm Scroll. It was copied by scribes during the days of Jesus and it contains portions of Psalms 101-150.

I read about two men who were the sole survivors of a shipwreck. They floated in a life raft for several days but they didn't see any passing ships, and no planes flew overhead. They were hot, sunburnt, thirsty and famished! One of the men said, ''Maybe we should pray?''

They weren't religious, but the second guy replied, ''Anything we do is better than nothing. Do you know any prayers?''

The first guy said, ''I grew up next door to a church. If you want, I could just repeat what I heard.'' He bowed his head and said, ''B-15 ... I-26 ... N-7 ... G-32 ... O-11.''

Question: What would the world learn from our gatherings if they could listen to our worship? Our singing and prayers reflect our view of God and our relationship to him. What does our worship teach our children and guests?

We're in a series called Route 66 - and we're taking a Roadtrip Through the Bible one book at a time. We've covered the books of Law and History, and we started the books of Wisdom last week. This is Week No. 19 and we're in Psalms.

The Psalms were a Hebrew book of songs and prayers. They reveal man's view of his Creator. They teach us what worship is all about. They inform us about the things God desires from us when we come before Him.

There are 150 Psalms, I get about 26 minutes, so we obviously can't read them all! I'd like to share some of the common threads, and explain how they're divided and who wrote them because more people read the Psalms than any other bo ...
