Proverbs
The proverb from that clip is from Proverbs 27:
15 A nagging spouse is like the drip, drip, drip of a leaky faucet;
16 restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with your hand.
And while most men see the faint resemblance of humor, here's a verse from Job that I conveniently overlooked:
Job 29:17 My breath is offensive to my wife; I am repulsive to my own family.
You're welcome, ladies. Biblical humor is not restrained by gender! We're in a series called Route 66: A Roadtrip Through the Bible. This is Week No. 20, and today we're in Proverbs.
Proverbs is the most practical book in the Old Testament. It offers frank illustrations and insights about everyday life. Unlike the stories that require us to extract their lessons, Proverbs just puts 'em ought there!
For example, Proverbs 25:
16 If you find honey, eat just enough; too much and you'll vomit.
17 Visit your neighbor's house sparingly; too much of you and they'll vomit, too.
That reminds me of a Benjamin Franklin quote: ''Guests, like fish, begin to stink after three days.'' That's a fairly appropriate quote near Thanksgiving, right?
Christie has one sister. When they were in high school, a single fella from church used to drop by their house. He had nowhere to be, nowhere to go and no time limit to meet. Christie's Dad called him ''The Midnight Cowboy!''
The Proverbs exist because God asked Solomon what he wanted, and Solomon requested wisdom in spades!
1 Kings 4:29 God gave Solomon wisdom and insight, as measureless as the sand on the seashore.
32 Over the course of his life, he spoke three thousand proverbs.
34 From all the nations of the world, people came to listen to his wisdom.
This same wisdom is available to us today. In fact, it's been assembled into 31 convenient chapters. That's one for every day of the average month.
