Jesus Is Lord! (51 of 66)
Series: Route 66: A Road Trip Through the Bible
Tony Thomas
Colossians
The Path is a TV drama that portrays the members of a fictional religion known as Meyerism. It was originally titled The Way until the producers discovered a real-life cult called, The Way International. Followers of The Path combine aspects of New Age philosophy, Shamanism and Scientology.
Meyerism, however, is a fictional movement. The founder claims to have climbed a ladder of burning light to receive the message of universal truth. That message is contained in a book called The Ladder.
The basic beliefs of Meyerists mirror the Bible. For example, they ...
1. Believe all people are damaged ...
2. Seek to alleviate the suffering of the world ...
3. Care deeply about humanity ...
4. Attempt to create a heavenly garden on earth.
But ... The Path distorts the absolute truth of God by subtraction and/or addition:
1. Non-believers are treated as the enemy (they are called deniers) ...
2. Their actions spark the apocalypse ...
3. Former Meyerists are extorted out of life-long savings ...
4. The leaders live above the tenets of their faith.
You're probably wondering about the relevance of a fictional religion, right? We're in a series called Route 66, and we're Taking a Roadtrip Through the Bible. We covered the Old Testament in 2016 and we started the New Testament in January, 2017. Today we're in Colossians, Paul's thirteenth letter.
Paul was told that the church was growing, but false teachers were undermining their faith. Colossians was written because some of the believers had been deceived. As a result, Paul penned a quick letter to encourage their efforts and correct their error.
Colossians is only 4 chapters in length, a mere 95 verses, so I want to divide my talk into three parts. By way of background, I want to share some trivia. Then we'll recognize the dividing heresies before concluding with the major themes.
