Series: Route 66: A Road Trip Through the Bible

2 Thessalonians
Jesus said (Matthew 24):
42 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.
I enrolled at the Cincinnati Bible Seminary in the fall of 1972. The talk of the campus was Hal Lindsay's latest book, The Late Great Planet Earth. That book was released in1970, and Lindsey claimed Jesus would return in 1988.
Obviously, Lindsay was wrong! But he did become a millionaire, and in the process, he led two generations of gullible Christians astray.
Not to be outdone, Harold Camping came up w/his own end-time's calendar. Camping predicted that Jesus would return on May 21, 2011. He taught that believers would be raptured and five months of fire and brimstone would follow on earth.
Like Hal Lindsay, Harold Camping was equally wrong! His predictions did bring worldwide acclaim: his radio ratings quadrupled and his ministry received millions in donations (anybody see a pattern?).
But the list of charlatans is lengthy! In 1524, Thomas Muntzer a German peasant, predicted the return of Jesus. Muntzer foresaw the defeat of the mighty by the lowly. He claimed to have had a vision of catching cannonballs in the sleeve of his cloak. Guess how he died? That's right ... cannon fire!
Charles Russell founded the Jehovah Witnesses and predicted the Lord's return in 1878. He repeated that prediction in 1881, and 1910. Charles Russell died but in 1975 the Watchtower predicted His return, and they repeated that prediction in 1984. So far, the Jehovah Witness are 0-of-5!
One of the more outrageous claims occurred in 1988. Ever hear of the book, 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Is in 1988? The author is Edgar Whisenant. He scheduled the Rapture for September 11-13, but somebody forgot to check the Lord's calendar!
But Whisenant had an entrepaneurial spirit because he sold 4.5 million copies of his book. He gave 300,000 copies away to pastors. T ...
