Elijah McCoy (May 2, 1844) was a Canadian-American inventor and engineer who was notable for his 57 U.S. patents. Among other things, he invented the ironing board, the lawn sprinkler and the steam engine lubricator. All of those inventions are still used today.
According to www.phrases.org/uk, the popular expression, ''the real McCoy,'' goes back to Elijah McCoy. Railroad engineers worried about the quality of inferior copies, so they requested McCoy's oil-drip cup invention by asking for ''the real McCoy system.''
If you're the Real McCoy, you're the genuine article. You're the real deal. You're a person who does what he says, and you speak the truth.
That's what the book of James is all about! We're in a series called Route 66 and we're working our way through the Bible one book at a time. This is week No. 59 and according to my schedule we'll finish on the first Sunday of October.
It has taken us almost two years to finish and I know that some of you are exhausted! At least one person gave up at Leviticus! His name will remain anonymous for obvious reasons. But, I have been encouraged because so many of you have already finished reading through the Bible for the first time ever. Awesome!
Let's take these five chapters and divide them in half. I want to spend the first half dealing with the background. That doesn't sound exciting but if you know the man I think you'll appreciate why he says what he says. Then we'll need to cover the message that he shares.
