A Tale of Three Men (64 of 66)
Series: Route 66: A Road Trip Through the Bible
Tony Thomas
3 John
There's something about brevity which makes a message all the more emphatic. For example, on November 22, 1963 Walter Cronkite interrupted the regular CBS programming and said, ''The President has been shot.''
On April 14, 1970 the Crew of Apollo 13 relayed a message to earth: ''Houston, we have a problem.''
On August 9, 1974 Gerald Ford was sworn in as our new President after Richard Nixon resigned. Ford simply said, ''Our long national nightmare is over.''
How about one more? On December 22, 1944, in a little place called Bastogne in a country that was once called Belgium the 101st Airborne Division was trapped. Completely! They were surrounded by Nazi troops and there was no escape.
Seven days passed, all supply routes were cut off and it was just a matter of time before nature took its course. General Heinrich Lutwitz was ordered to press for an American surrender, so he wrote the following note:
''To the USA Commander: The fortune of war is changing. You are surrounded by German armored units. There is only one possibility to save your troops: that is the honorable surrender.
Two hours will be granted beginning with the presentation of this note. If rejected, one German Artillery Corps and six heavy Battalions are ready to annihilate you.
Signed, the German Commander''
General Anthony McAuliffe read that note, crumpled it up and scribbled an immediate response:
''To the German Commander: Nuts!
Signed, the American Commander''
The Germans had no idea what the word ''nuts'' meant! But the American forces did not surrender, the Germans did not attempt to annihilate them, the 4th Armored Division reinforced McAuliffe and General Patton awarded McAuliffe a medal of valor.
Brevity doesn't say much, but when it does it packs a punch! That's 3 John - in a nutshell (pun intended). We're in a series called Route 66 and currently, we're ...
