John 10:11-15

Sheep are helpless animals. They cannot defend themselves. They cannot see very well so they are easily lead astray. They have no sense of direction and will wander off a cliff. Without a shepherd, they are helpless because they need to follow someone who will care, guide and protect them.

The Bible compares man and women to sheep who need care. Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned - every one - to his own way.

We may be independent and think we are self-sufficient, but the truth is we are helpless and hopeless without God to care for us. He provides: air for us to breathe, food for us to eat, water for us to drink, parents to raise us, sunshine to warm us and light to allow us to see are just a small part of what he provides for us.

Our greatest need is not physical, but spiritual. We need to be forgiven of our sins so we are no longer guilty before God. Psalm 32:1-2 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord does not count iniquity.

Jesus says he is the good shepherd who will die for his sheep.
He willingly died in our place so we can be forgiven of our sins.

Chuck Swindoll - ''The Pharisees, who were supposed to be the shepherds of God's people, in ...
