The Meaning and the Message of the Lord's Supper
Collins Wimberly
I Corinthians. 11:23-32
CIT - Paul explains the meaning of the Lord's Supper to correct the Corinthian believers.
Proposition - Christians need to understand the meaning of the Lord's Supper.
INTRODUCTION:
Introduce the Lord's Supper All believers are welcome at the Lord's Table. We will receive the elements together. Our offering will be received at the doors.
Introduce the passage context - It is Thursday, what many call Maundy Thursday. For Jesus and His disciples it was the first day of the Feast of unleavened bread, and the celebration of Passover. This is the first of the major Jewish feast days. It's meaning is rich.
As they entered the room, there would typically be a servant or slave wash their feet. Jesus himself does this. They would then recline around the table. That evening there would be a simple meal. Unleavened bread, bitter herbs and vinegar. On the table would be 4 cups of wine. Ritual cups shared by all at the table.
They would eat roasted lamb and on leaving sing a traditional Psalm, known as a Hallel.
This Passover is different than those before. Jesus is hours away from crucifixion. He knows this. He takes the Passover mean and infuses it with new meaning. We now call it the Lord's Supper or communion, some call it Eucharist.
Jesus commands us to observe it. Paul reminds us of this command. Read the passage
The Lord's supper is one of the most significant and meaningful moments in a Church's life.
I) A TIME TO PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL - VS. 23-26 Vs. 26 - To proclaim is to preach. What is being preached is the Gospel. The Good news of Jesus Christ.
A. WE PROCLAIM THE DEATH OF CHRIST -
1. HIS BODY - This bread does not become the body of Christ. This supper is representative and memorial. There is nothing supernatural about this bread or this juice!
It represents his body that was broken on the cross for our sins.
2. HIS BLOOD ...
