Philippians 1:12-20
CIT- Paul encourages the Philippian believers by instructing them that his persecution and imprisonment is being used by God to advance His Kingdom. Proposition - Christians need to have a Gospel centered understanding of life.
INTRODUCTION:
2 Cor. 4:7-12: How was Paul able to suffer so much and not fall to depression and disillusionment?
These verses contain the key to understanding Paul's outlook on life.
I) THINGS JUST DON'T HAPPEN - GOD IS SOVEREIGN - VS. 12-14
Let us take a moment and trace the events in Paul's life that have led him to his moment in time.
The great church planter, writer of Scripture and theologian determined in Acts to go to Jerusalem. In Acts 21 he was warned by the prophet Agabus that he would be imprisoned. But he continued on. In Acts 23-24 He is plotted against by the Jews. They spread a lie about him that has the entire city ready to kill him. A city wide riot ensues and he is arrested by the Roman guard. The Jews than have 40 men who vow to assassinate him. The romans learn of it and send him to Caessara to Prison. He is kept in Prison for 2 years by the Governor, Felix. Felix is hoping for a bribe. Festus replace Felix and has Paul brought before him. He wants to send Paul back to Jerusalem, but Paul exercises his right as a roman citizen and appeals to Cesar and is sent to Rome. On the way, he shipwrecked on Malta, Nearly dying in the storm that wrecked him. Then finally, he arrives in Rome. His now under house arrest. A Roman Praetornian guard stationed at his house. He will spend two years there.
And yet not once do we find Paul complaining about his circumstances.
Vs. 12 - I know that what has happened to me. . .
God is in control of his life. God is in control of the trials and troubles he faces. He has not been left to fate or to circumstance. The sovereignty of God is His absolute ...
