INTRODUCTION: The US is interesting place. We are often cited as being the fattest, most unhealthy nation in the world. Yet, on the other hand, we have more gyms, sell more fitness videos and equipment than any other nation. We know what to do, but just don't want to do it. This verse can be summarized in this way - ''Our salvation is a process that requires our effort and our sincerity; but is initiated by God, empowered by God, and for the great glory of God.
Now - let's take each phrase of that sentence apart.
1) SALVATION IS A PROCESS - When Paul uses the word salvation, he often means more just the moment we believed.
Salvation has 3 time dimensions or 3 tenses.
1. Past Tense - My decision to accept Christ. It is conscious and Life-changing. This is justification - We are declared innocent before God. Our sins are forgiven.
2. Present Tense - Obedience and holiness. This is what is being described in Vs. 12 - As you have always obeyed- This is sanctification.
3. Future tense - Our salvation will be completed, we receive glorified bodies. I John 3:2 So - We have been saved, we are being saved, and we will be saved. When Paul commands us to work out our salvation he is not commanding us to work to be justified. Justification is by faith alone. However, to work out our salvation is to be holy, to be obedientiji
