Philippians 3:1-3


CIT - Paul writes to the Philippian believers to safeguard them in their faith.
Proposition - Paul gives principles to encourage Christians as they work out their salvation.

INTRODUCTION: Thanksgiving is Thursday - We look forward to all that comes with that. These verses are good principles to study before Thanksgiving. These verse give us some solid Biblical teaching we need in this day. The word finally is a transition. We would say - so or therefore . . . Paul is continuing his thoughts from earlier. He will encourage them by telling them how to work out their salvation - How to continue to grow up spiritually.

Some wise words for God's people as they seek to grow spiritually.

I) FIRST, PAUL COMMANDS US TO REJOICE IN THE LORD - 3:1

As believers we are to take joy and delight in the God. We acknowledge that the Joy of the Lord is our strength. Like the Psalmist they find in ''god their exceeding joy.''

Joy is a continuing theme in the book of Philippians. In 1:25 and in 2:18 he commands them to be joyful. In this verse he refines what he is saying - He makes his thought more specific - He tells them to rejoice in the Lord.

Make some personal application here - I have not always understood this. Joy in my thinking was an emotion, and there have been times where I had no joy - no emotions except sorrow or fear or anger.

This does not refer to an emotion, but to an activity. This verbal - we praise the Lord. (Fee) .This is volitional in that we choose to obey the Lord - MacArthur.

A) WE REJOICE IN HIS LORDSHIP -
He is the King, He is the Lord. We rejoice in His majesty. We exalt in his Magnificence. We choose to praise Him even when we feel sorrow or grief. We choose to say words of praise rather than words of depression and anxiety.

B) WE REJOICE IN THE REDEMPTION THAT HE PROVIDES - As Lord he redeems me. He has saved me. ...
