Philippians 3:12-16


YCIT: Paul instructs the Philippian belivers to follow His example by striving for spiritual maturity.

PROPOSITION: Paul instructs believers to be diligent in pursuing spiritual maturity.

INTRODUCTION:

Follow with me a 90-year-old man bent with the weight of his years; slow of step, with stooped and rounded shoulders. It is early morning, and he's in his home. We note that he sits down and picks up a cello. The man and the instrument merge. He plays for four or five hours. When he plays, the years seem to fall off this special man who's 90 years old and still practicing. He is generally regarded as the pre-eminent cellist of the first half of the 20th century, and one of the greatest cellists of all time.Why on earth would Pablo Casals, at age 90, continue to practice? Somebody asked him, and he said, ''I practice because I have the impression I'm making a little progress.''

How is your spiritual growth? Have you grown in your walk with Christ today, this week, this month, this year? Paul will give us several principles about growing in spiritual maturity.v

I) YOU ARE A WORK IN PROGRESS-VS. 12

''Not that I have already attained.''; '' I do not count myself to have apprehended.'' Paul does not see himself as having arrived spiritually. He is probably combating some form of perfectionism.

ILLUS: Building the new building. We watched the slab being poured, the walls going up, the roof, then the inside began to take shape. That's the idea here. Except that when it comes to spiritual maturity God's construction project is never completed in this life. Why?

A) HONESTY ''I do not count myself to have apprehended.'' Paul was honest with himself, he knew there were areas in his life still very much under construction!
