The Fugitive (2 of 5)
Series: Jonah
Collin Wimberly
Jonah 1:4-17
INTRODUCTION:
ILLUS; Airplane flight - the pilot announced that they had lost one engine, a 45 minute delay as they circled the airport. Again, the pilot comes on the speaker and said, don't worry, but we have lost a second engine, there will be another 30 minute delay. Later he comes on and say, again no need to be concerned, but we have lost a third engine, and there will be another 30 minute delay as we circle the airport. One man turned to the guy sitting next to him and said - ''if we lose that last engine, we'll be up here all day!''
Someone said that he didn't understand the 'gravity' of the situation!
I don't think that many of us understand the gravity of running away from God. Tonight, we see Jonah as a man on the run, a fugitive from God. Being a spiritual fugitive is a serious crime in the eyes of God. We'll notice several truths about running from God, truths about sin in this passage.
I) SIN IS A REBELLIOUS AND PRESUMPTUOUS ACT - Vs. 3 - Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish - Do you realize that in this book, Jonah, the man of God and prophet of Israel is the only one who disobeys the Lord?
God speaks to the waves and they obey, he sends a storm and it obeys, The lots that the sailors cast obey the Lord's will, the sailors themselves will fear the Lord and sacrifice to him and obey. God sends a fish - it obeys. God sends Jonah to Nineveh - they obey. The worm that chews Jonah's plant obeys, even the plant itself obeys God: Everyone and everything in the book obeys God except Jonah.
Think about it God speaks to the stars and they move according to his plan and purpose. He speaks the planets, the comets, the meteors and they line up and obey His voice. He speaks to the seas and the oceans and says: you go this far and no farther and they obey. He speaks to us and we say NO!
Sin is presumptuous. The angels in Heaven who obey the every whim and whisper of Gods ...
