INTRODUCTION: History is filled with the story of people who have been down and have come back. Abraham Lincoln - No has ever descended deeper into a fish's belly politically than did Lincoln. He lost a race for state legislature in Illinois in 1832, congress in 1843 and agin in 1848. In 1855 he ran for the senate again and lost and lost as VP of the US in 1856. He became president in 1860 and lives in history as one of the greatest American presidents. Lincoln is proof that you can't keep a good man down.
Rocky movies - I have always been a fan. I admit that when the last movie came out, I was skeptical. But it was great! It had all the magic of the first movie. What we love about Rocky is that he is the underdog who comes out on top. Rocky is proof that you can't keep a good man down!
Then there is Jonah. Jonah is a man a fish couldn't keep down!
Vs. 17 - Don't miss this - The Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah!
A lot of liberal scholars have stated this is just too much to believe. They use this passage and others like it to prove that the Bible is nothing more than a book of religious myths or parables - not historical fact. Not great living conditions! If I believe that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh, crucified for my sins, buried for three days, and then risen again to life, and now seated at the right hand of the heavenly Father - I have no trouble believing that Jonah could be swallowed by a fish, and that God could keep him alive for three days in that fish's belly.
The fish was a sovereign act of almighty God - This was not some kind of freak accident!
