CIT - God gives Jonah a second chance to preach to Nineveh.

Illus: Imaginary basketball game. Standing on the free-throw line. No time on the clock, one point down, I've been fouled and there are two shots. I shoot the first one, nothing but net, the second, rolls around the rim, its in, now its out! But wait - one of the other team's players jumped in the lane before you shot. You get another chance!

Don't you wish things were like that in life? You could get a second chance at school, a second chance at marriage, at raising children, at your job?

Some people say you never get second chances. I'm pretty sure that between chapters 2 and 3 Jonah wondered if it was all over for him. He probably thought he was all washed up as a preacher and a prophet. Maybe he didn't think that would ever use a man like him again.

Yet, in vs. 1 we find these wonderful words - the word of the Lord came again to Jonah!

In this passage we find one of the great stories of the God of Second Chances. Jonah and Nineveh get another opportunity.

I) JONAH'S SECOND CHANCE - Jonah once again stands at the door of a great decision. A tremendous opportunity. He had heard God's voice before, and rebelled. Now standing on the shores of the sea, shaken and stinking from three days in the belly of a fish, we find some words of hope.

The Word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time!

What does it mean that God gave a Jonah a second chance?

A) THERE WAS A NEW CALL TO OBEDIENCE - ''Arise, go to Ninevah.'' God brings Jonah back to his point of disobedience. ILLUS: Children - They disobey, many times the discipline is not lifted until they change their behavior, correct what got them into trouble in the first place! Leah Carrie - picking up the toys off the floor. She would cry and say she's sorry, but then you tell her to pick them up and she won't! In trouble again, all because of stubbornn ...
