John 2:13-25


CIT - Jesus confronts the perversion of Jewish worship by cleansing the temple.
PROPOSITION- Christians must be passionate about God's purpose for His house.

INTRODUCTION: For most of us this is one of the most shocking actions that Jesus performs. It does not fit our preconceptions of Jesus and meek and mild. Here he seems angry and forceful.

Describe the scene -

I. OWNERSHIP - The problem was that the religious leaders had taken ownership of the temple.
This applies to us

A) INDIVIDUALLY - You belong to Christ. You were bought with a price. You are the temple of God.
1 Peter 2:5 (NKJV) 5 you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV) 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. This is not my life, this is not my ministry, this is not my church, It is Christ's. This life I have is not my own to live - it belongs to Jesus!

B) CORPORATELY - The church belongs to Christ. This is Christ's Church. Ephesians 1:22 (NKJV) 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, This is Christ's church, he makes the rules, he sets the agenda. He determines our direction and our mission. How do we know His will - His word. His word is absolute truth!

II. MISSION - ''do not make my Father's house a house of trade.'' Israel had lost the mission of the temple. The temple was to be a place of worship for God's people. This was where the sacrifices were made. The Torah was taught and discussed. This was a place of prayer. The temple was also a pl ...
