Series: John: Who is Jesus?
Collin Wimberley
John 13:1-6
CIT - Jesus encourages his disciples by teaching them about heaven.
Proposition - Christians should be encouraged and comforted by our anticipation of heaven.
INTRODUCTION:
As a young man in college I learned something about growing up. Once you leave home - it's never really the same again. Describe.
What if I were to tell you this morning that we were designed for a home that we will never experience in this life? What if I told you that our home here in this world is not really our home at all, But we were made for something far better?
Jesus describes our heavenly home to is disciples in these verses.
1. FAITH OVERCOMES OUR FEARS -
At this point the disciples were bewildered and discouraged. Jesus has been telling them that he is going away, 13:33, that he is going to die, 12:32-33, that one of the 12 is a traitor and that Peter would disown him, and that Satan was working against them. They must have felt that all the props had been kicked out from under them. They had no idea what the future might hold. They were afraid. Can you relate? Have you ever had something happen to you that sent you reeling and left you feeling out of control and afraid?
Notice: He gives them a command. A strong negative imperative. DO NOT LET YOUR HEARTS BE TROUBLED. Troubled is to shaken or stirred up. Another way of stating would be ''Stop letting your heart be troubled.''
We see his compassion. He cares about them. Apply: This is good. He cares about your fears and your concerns and your situation. He tells them how to overcome their fears and their confusion.
Believe. Twice he commands them to believe. Literally he says ''Don't stop believing,''
Don't stop believing in what ?
A. IN GOD - In his goodness and His character.
B. IN JESUS - His purposes and his plans. What the disciples could not yet see was the victory that Christ was going to win through is dea ...
