Tonight, starting with prophecies from Old Testament prophets and ending with writings from early founders of church, we heard story of Jesus, the Son of God who come to earth, born as human being.
Lots of things in what read worth thinking about. But for tonight, for just short time want focus in on what apostle John says about this in chapter 1 of the Gospel of John. Pull out some thoughts from v.4 and then v.14 to help remind us the impact of Jesus coming into our world.
Start with v.4. Listen to this description of Jesus coming into world. John describes as light coming into darkness. “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
An important truth about world – that world is in darkness. I think more and more, this something hard argue against. You kind of, by instinct, nod your head at. Read your favorite news website, watch nightly news report, and you hear about things all over world that speak to darkness. People being killed and abused. Money being stolen. Children being orphaned. Yes, this world is in darkness.
But, to press this point more, this darkness not just out there. Also in each of our own hearts.
- It’s there, in the not especially nice thoughts and words you had about those people who annoyed you.
- It’s there, in the proud way you compared yourself to those people
- It’s there, in the jealousness you felt when you compared yourself to those people
- It’s there, in the selfish grab for attention you among those people
And of course, this all manifests itself in bitterness and grudge holding. In conflict and division. In fear and anxiety. In distrust and doubt.
This is “the darkness.” It’s so much part of us that often don’t see it. We even accept as normal. (When in fact is far from normal. Far from what God originally intended for our world and for human beings.)
