Really is true. Birth of child life-changing experience. Struck by several things. Danger (there is pain, effort). Vulnerability. Fragility. Neediness.

Mention so as impress upon us this amazing truth - when Bible says birth of Jesus means ''God with us,'' means God coming into danger, vulnerability, pain and suffering, neediness.

God came be ''with us'' at huge risk. Why? So might save us.

I. Just consider name, Jesus. Jesus pronounced Yeshua in Hebrew, means ''the Lord saves'' or ''O Lord, save.'' Make point clearer, angel in dream to Joseph, ''You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.''

So God comes be with us in Jesus, might save us. We need saving. Not talking about saving from eating too much candy or having hangnail. Talking about saving from our sins.

II. Sin describes all we do against God and his goodness. Every good, beautiful, perfect thing in our world comes from God. In fact, our conception of certain things being instrincally good - like caring for children, like loving your spouse, like helping others without expecting something in return - comes from God who, because he is good, defines all that's good.

Now sin describes attitudes, habits, thoughts, actions we have that pervert and corrupt God and his goodness and beauty. Sneaky nature of sin. Makes us settle, rationalize, not enjoy what should enjoy. (Examples...) Sin makes us prideful, so prideful start overlooking obvious things about our world, things that point to God.

Eventually all this leads to death and darkness for us.

III. That's why need forgiveness of our sins. Only way sin dealt with and we saved from steady path to self-destruction. Sin disruptive enslaving force. So need deal with head-on. Only one can do ...
