Jesus' Mystery (3 of 12)
Series: Jesus' Glory
Steve Jones
John 3
Sermon Summary: Jesus' encounter with Nicodemus reveals the glory of his MYSTERY in four ways: 1) Mysterious signs. 2) Mysterious teaching. 3) Mysterious birth. 4) Mysterious love.
INTRODUCTION: One summer, in between college semesters, I worked at Disney World. As a Disney employee, I gained access to the ''underground city.'' Below the surface of Disney World is a city with roads, cafeterias, locker rooms, stores, and the world's largest laundry service. I saw where the costumes came from. I saw how the Disney characters appeared and disappeared using their secret entrances throughout the park. I learned of the undercover security officers. I saw the people inside the costumes. I learned the logistics of the electric light parade. I saw the ''man behind the curtain'' so to speak. It was all very interesting and I'm glad for the experience. But, the ''mouse,'' lost a little bit of its magic for me that summer. The mystery was gone.
We all need a little mystery in our lives. God is willing and able to oblige.
We're in a sermon-series entitled ''Signs'' based upon the statement in John 20:31 ''These (signs) are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.'' In this series, we're following the connection between what Jesus' signs reveal about him and our faith in him. John 2:11 ''He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.'' The ''glory'' of Jesus in this context is his character, his nature, revealed in his signs. So far, we've seen that Jesus is caring and zealous.
As I was reflecting on Jesus' encounter with Nicodemus I asked myself, ''What does this encounter teach us about the glory (character) of Christ?'' That's the question of this entire series. My answer? Jesus is mysterious. He's a touch on the enigmatic side. Let me show you what I mean.
