Jesus Challenges (4 of 14)
Series: Jesus' Glory
Steve Jones
John 5
Sermon Summary: Jesus' healing of the lame man by the Pool of Bethesda reveals the glory of Jesus' challenge. Jesus challenges our routines, our hearts and our sin.
INTRODUCTION: In 2014 people all over the United States were posting videos of themselves on Facebook being doused with buckets of ice cold water - voluntarily! What was going on? It was called the ''Ice Bucket Challenge.'' It started with Pete Frates, a Boston College alumnus who was diagnosed with ALS in March 2012. He posted a video of himself being doused with a bucket of ice water and in the video ''challenged'' specific friends of his to donate to ALS therapy development institute or pour a bucket of ice water over their heads. The videos caught on and quickly went ''viral.'' Lots of famous people did it. Former president George W. Bush took the challenge and nominated former president Bill Clinton to do likewise. Eventually, over 2.4 million tagged videos circulated on Facebook. The ALS association received $41.8 million dollars in donations from more than 739,000 new donors from July 29th to August 21st. More than double their receipts from the entire previous year.
