Jesus' Service (11 of 14)
Series: Jesus' Glory
Steve Jones
John 13
Sermon Summary: Jesus' washing of the disciples feet illustrates the glory of his service. Jesus offered 1) Loving service, 2) Secure service, 3) Humble service and 4) Proactive service.
INTRODUCTION: J.C. and Karen Spencer call in their breakfast order to their local Houston Chick-fil-A every day. On Monday morning, (8.28.17), they had a slightly different request: Instead of the usual, they asked for a boat to rescue them from their flooded home. It was by mere coincidence that the Spencer's even got someone on the line. The restaurant was closed because of Hurricane Harvey. The manager, Jeffrey Urban, just happened to be there checking on everything. He answered the phone. J.C. said he was trying to reach out to people, and he couldn't get any response from 911, so he called Chick-fil-A to see if we could help him out. Urban, the manager, said, ''It was such a blessing that, in that exact moment, I was there to answer the phone and get him help.'' Urban, the restaurant owner, and HR director Cindy Smith headed out to the Spencer's house with a boat and a jet ski in tow. The image of Karen Spencer sitting comfortably atop a jet ski is unforgettable -- a little humor and a lot of kindness in the face of tragedy. And by the way, Urban says, J.C. Spencer called the Chick-fil-A again on Wednesday, just two days after the dramatic rescue. This time though, he really did just want his breakfast burrito. Chic fil a has a reputation not only for chicken sandwiches but also for customer service. They serve. They take their service cues from Jesus.
We've been studying the gospel of John learning lessons about Jesus' glory. Remember we're learning these lessons not only to appreciate Jesus' glory but to reflect it in our own lives (II Cor.3:18). In John 13 Jesus shows himself to be a servant. Let's break it down this morning. What kind of service did Jesus offer?
