Sermon Summary: Jesus' trial and crucifixion reveal the glory of his courage: 1) His emotional courage, 2) His spiritual courage and 3) His physical courage.
INTRODUCTION: After hurricane Irma, a radio talk-show host was discussing his hurricane Irma experience. He said on Sunday night, when Irma was passing over, it sounded like the roof was coming off his house. The wind was howling, the roof was banging and thumping, he thought he heard the ''train'' (what a tornado supposedly sounds like). He prayed, ''Oh Lord, please save us. Don't let me die. Don't destroy my house. Don't tear the roof off.'' Thankfully, he and his house survived the night. The next morning, he went outside and discovered the primary cause of the noise: avocados. The storm had blown avocados off a tree and they had been hitting his roof.
Life requires courage because life is full of scary moments. It's Biblical to be courageous.
I Corinthians 16:13 ''Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.'' And there are different kinds of courage because there are different kinds of threats.
Today I want to talk about the courage of Jesus. We've been in a sermon series looking at the glory (character/nature) of Jesus based upon his signs and actions in the gospel of John. Today we come to the crucifixion. And in the crucifixion, we learn of the courage of Jesus. Something occurred to me last week as I was thinking about this. If not for the crucifixion, we would not even know about this aspect of God's nature. Since God is all-powerful he's not threatened by anyone or anything.
Ps.2:2-4 ''The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord...But the one who rules in heaven laughs. The Lord scoffs at them!'' Of course he scoffs. God is not afraid of anyone. He has overwhelming superiority of arms, power, knowledge, technology. He can't even die...or he couldn't. If ...
