Matthew 16:13-20
A man was on a desert island all by himself. One day he sees a ship out in the ocean there and he sends up a smoke signal. It was a navy ship, and the navy ship sees the smoke and the navy ship comes to this deserted little island, and they find this man. And they said, ''Wow! How long have you been here?'' He said, ''I have been shipwrecked on this island alone for 5 years.'' And they said, ''Wow! That's a long time. You're alone?'' He said, ''I'm alone.'' And they said, ''Well, we see three huts there.'' He said, ''Well, yeah,'' he said, ''the first hut is where I live.'' And they said, ''Well, yeah, what about the second one?'' He said, ''Well, the second one is where I go to church.'' And they said, ''Well, what about the third one?'' He said, ''Oh, that's where I used to go to church.''
We want to talk today about the church. Some people get upset at church and go to another church, obviously. We're in a series, and we're finishing the series today called Foundations. And today, we want to talk about the church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The church was born on the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2) when the Lord came down in the Holy Spirit and He indwelt believers, one hundred and twenty believers. And on the day of Pentecost, in one day, the church grew by three thousand as Peter preached, and three thousand souls were saved. And since the birth of the church nearly two thousand years ago, the church of the Lord Jesus Christ has been attacked from without and attacked from within. The church has faced persecution and it's faced theological perversion. It's faced opposition and oppression, yet the church of the Lord Jesus Christ continues to stand strong. Now it's amazing when you think about the history and the things that have happened, ah, in religious history that the church is still standing, but it is, and it will always be standing.
