1 John 1: 1-4 (1 of 9)
Vermon Pierre
Series: 1 John
Today starting series in book of Bible called 1 John. 1 John written by one of the disciples of Jesus, a man named John. He was one of the disciples closest to Jesus. Called ''the beloved disciple.''
John writes this letter, along with 2 and 3 John, towards end of his life. Was living here in city of Ephesus. (located in modern day Turkey - you can go there today and visit the ruins). Date as probably early 90s after he had already written the Gospel of John.

What are they spreading? Denying that Jesus and the Christ are the same person. That there is unity between the Father and the Son. They claim to follow God and that they are sinless but their behavior says otherwise.
Seems that all this has caused some to become confused and even unsure about their faith.
So what John do? Writes this pastoral letter to the churches in the region. His writing style, as we'll, is not exactly linear. Goes in one direction, then another, often returning to same themes over and over again. This of course is deliberate. Wants to reinforce key truths in hearts of his readers. Provide assurance and confidence in these truths.
And so over and over again in 1 John, John focuses on key truths on who God, who Jesus is, what God accomplished through Jesus. And because of these things, if you know them and believe in them, should respond to them in right way. Respond in faith, love, obedience. Hence title of sermon series. Here is what I hope happens as a result of our time together - that we would love God better. That we would love one another more. That we obey his commandments fully. All of which, I think is especially needed for where we as a church find our ...
