So passage this morning. We start off with something about who God is and then some things about how we are to relate to God because of who he is.

God is light, and in him is no darkness at all (v.5).

Images of light and darkness here are being used to say something important about God. Namely, the very pure nature of God. That he is so pure in who he is, there is no darkness, that is to say, no sin within him. God is so much light, not even smallest trace of darkness in him. 100% righteous. 100% good. 100% just.

Understanding this about God is really, really important. Because if want have fellowship with God - to be in close relationship with him - need have a life that is in sync with God. Can't be in darkness, i.e. can't have active sin in your life, and be relationship with God. v.7, have to ''[live] in the light as he is in the light.''

Illus Imagine got a small pet, let's a say a cat, hiding under the couch. You trying to get cat out from under couch to give it a new toy. You want this cat to have this toy. But the cat has got to leave dark space under the couch, come out into the open space of the living room and meet you there, to get this toy. Because it's not like you can crawl into that dark space under the couch where the cat is. She has to come out to where you are if she is to enjoy what you have to give her.

You see, God can't fit into the dark space of our sin. Too big and too full of light. And in fact, shouldn't want him to do that, to try to crawl into our dark cramped space of sin. God wants to draw us out from under the dark, cramped space of sin we are in and bring us into the open, light filled space he is in. 

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. This is what I want everyone of us to experience today. The open freedom of being with God in the light. When we do that, we don't just gain the best kind of ...
