As we come to our passage today, a lot has already been written. You all will remember that this letter that we called 1 John was written the apostle John. He wrote this letter to multiple churches. He's concerned about some people who were in the church who have left but are still trying to influence the church in wrong beliefs about God and about Jesus. And so he's written strongly, telling them, about the need to confess sin, the need to keep the commandments of God, to walk in the light as opposed to the darkness.

Some significant lessons and warnings in all he has written already. Already much to process. And there's still more to say.

John is aware of this. He has pastor's heart, and so before he writes more, he wants them to be encouraged. That's what we have in our passage, John stepping back a bit to affirm and encourage them in all that they already have in the Lord.

Great value and necessity of encouragement. How it strengthens...how it affirms. We need encouragement. Should try to encourage each other regularly. Hope to do so today through this passage.

Before we jump in, should say something about who John writing to. Notice, reference to little children, to fathers, to young men. Some debate on this over the years but context helps here. ''Little children'' is how John refers to all Christian readers of 1 John. So we who reading this right are the ''little children''; we are like ''little children'' to whom he, as an 80 something year old pastor, writes for encourage us.

Within that grouping however John has specific encouragements. To ''fathers'' and to ''young men.''

Fathers - those more mature in the faith i.e. usually older in age as well. Young men - those younger in their faith i.e. usually those younger in age.

Encouragements however said to each group broadly apply. So what he says in particular to more mature and older Christians apply to other Christians. ...
