Vermon Pierre
Series: 1 John

Talked about lot of things so far in 1 John. One big theme - what mean to be a Christian. Being a Christian that it involves confession of sin. It involves believing in Jesus as the one who able to take care of our sins. All this is what allows us to have relationship with God.

And that’s the ongoing reality of being a Christian. That to be a Christian is to be someone who has relationship with God. But not just any relationship, a relationship where relate to God as Father.

That brings us to our passage today, which makes the very simple but very significant point, that relationship like this is a relationship of commitment and devotion. It’s a relationship of love that must come above and against all other loves, like the love of the world.

And so you can describe this as a call to be committed fully and totally to God. Will you love God the Father and follow him? Or will you love and follow the world? You can’t do both. You can’t be in the family of God and also in the family of the world.

So what about the things about things that are “of the world” that go against God? These are things that, the more you have them in your life, the more shows lack God in your life. Remember v.15, “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

v.16 describes it as the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life
