One of the things people enjoy doing is watching home videos of their kids when they were really young. The, shall we say, ''wowness'' of seeing them as babies, young kids. And then, seeing how that plays out, the development of them as they grow up and mature as members of your family.

Similar kind of vibe going on here in our passage this morning. Consider what it means for us to be God's kids. There is, first, the awesome wonder behind fact that we are children of God. Then, secondly, practical reality of what it means to grow up in God's family, the practical reality of being and maturing as a child of God.

The awesome wonder of being a child of God - 3:1-3

v.1 - See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.''
Emphasis on unique nature of this. ''see what kind of love'' The adjective used here is one of astonishment. Like John is saying, ''What amazing, astonishing, unimaginable, out of this world love the Father has given us!''

Shown in fact that God brought us into his family. He called us his children, which doesn't only mean that he put his name on us. He MADE us his children. v.2 - ''Beloved, we ARE God's children NOW''

What love! That God made us his children, even though don't deserve, could never earn, and often waste it. God actually, really, with no take backs or second thoughts or do-overs, made us his children! You really are child of God! Verse 9 says ''God's seed abides'' in the believer. This really strong way of saying that, spiritually speaking, we have God's DNA now. Yes we really are ''born again!''

Now of course not fully there yet. v.2, and what we will be has not yet appeared. We still kids with some growing up to do. God's promise to us in these verses is that one day when Jesus returns, we will be fully mature, v.2, ''we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.'' This not to s ...
