As you can see, pretty obvious what sermon on today’s passage is going to be on. You can’t say you forgot what talked about this morning. Passage is extended look at love. The word ‘love’, or some form of it, occurs at least twenty-seven times in these fifteen verses. This is at the central teaching to letter of 1 John. What he most wants us to get.

But not just any kind of love. We looking specifically at the love of God and how meant to be expressed through us to each other.

You see, to love God is to love one another. If you have a relationship with God it WILL and MUST show itself in the love you extend to others.

Right here is the main point of the passage: 7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

Loving God means loving one another

And notice, this is not optional. v. 21, “And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.”

So we have to pay attention to this. Because own relationship with God is at stake. v.8 That you cannot know God apart from love of others. Let me say that again. If you aren’t wanting to love others, and grow in your love for others, than you probably don’t know God.

I’m assuming you are here and wanting to know God. You are wanting the kind of relationship with God that is sweet, vital, joyful, all the things we created to enjoy. If you want that, then need to figure out what it means to love one another.
