For our Pastor's Conference in Guatemala, we used material written by Dr. David Platt, who is the President of the IMB, on the Church. We talked about who the Church is, what the Church does, how the Church is led and where the Church is going. After a description of what the Church does, there was a section entitled, ''A Case Study: The Church in Antioch.''

The Church in Antioch, in many ways, was a model church. It is a case study for other churches on what to do. The church in Corinth, which we have been studying, well let's say, it is not a case study in what to do. It is a case study in what not to do. If as church you want to know what to do you could ask a few questions...

- Question: What did Antioch do? Okay, then do that.
- Question: How did Antioch respond? Okay, respond that way.
- Question: What did Corinth do? Okay, don't do that. Do the opposite.
- Question: How did Corinth respond? Okay, don't respond that way. Respond in the opposite manner.

The church is to ''permeate the world, to influence and change it according to the Gospel.''
- That was not happening in Corinth. The opposite was occurring. The farther we go in this study the more problems continue to mount for this church.
- This church is a pastoral nightmare. This is the church, if you are the pastor, when people ask, ''What do you do?'' and you respond, ''Well, I am pastor at the church in Corinth,'' that they say, ''Bless your heart! I'll be praying for you.''

As if the issue of incest, a man sleeping with his step-mother, and the embarrassment that caused the church wasn't enough, the Church developed another marketing strategy for getting the Church's name out there in the community...taking each other to court.

If you stop to think, we live in a very litigious society. People shout, ''I'll sue'' at the drop of a hat. Then they do. One person quipped, ''Our national motto ...
