Jesus Said Yes

Some people like surprises. They enjoy the adventure of the unknown and the thrill of the unexpected. For those of you who are like that, that's great but we all know that not all surprises are created equal. There is a big difference between:
- ''Honey, I bought you a new truck'' and ''Honey, ''I totaled your new truck.'' Surprise!
- Opening a letter from the IRS and finding a refund check and discovering you are being audited. Surprise!
- Walking into your boss' office and hearing, ''You're getting a raise and promotion'' and ''We've made some cuts. You've been let go.'' Surprise!
As Jesus approached the cross, the hour for which He had been born, the things about to take place were not a surprise.
- He did not approach the cross with His eyes shut in ignorance.
- Jesus did not come to this world expecting one outcome and receiving another.
- Half way through His ministry, Jesus did not hear the Father say, ''Son, this is not working out how I planned. I thought they would love you and follow You. Instead, those folks want to kill you. Let's see if we can make the best out of this death thing.'' That's not what happened.
- As the last minutes of the clock ticked off Jesus' life and He was moments away from betrayal and death, the Bible tells us, John 18.4, ''Jesus knew all things that would come upon Him.''
He knew what was going to happen but that doesn't mean it was easy for Him. As a matter of fact, it was difficult and frightening. In our passage, we will read about a battle Jesus fought before He ever went to the cross, one that included a brush with death.
By way of reminder, setting the stage, Jesus has celebrated Passover with His disciples. He has been talking with them and praying for them. Now, they were on a late-night journey to a garden where Jesus liked to pray. The Garden was called Gethsemane and would have had an olive press in the middle.
