A Neat Summary of the Christian Life
Richard Bradley
Luke 10:17-20
Luke 10:17-20:
17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, ''Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.''
18 And He said to them, ''I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.''
NKJV
I like things to be tied up in neat packages don't you? Sometimes it's best if we don't have to figure too much out on our own, or at least it is for me. When speaking of the kingdom of God and how it relates to believers Jesus was often very plain spoken, as He was in this text.
These four verses form a summary statement of the success experienced by the seventy disciples. As you remember Jesus sent out 70 of His most faithful followers on an evangelistic mission. When the disciples came back they were as excited as a group of believers could be. God's people get excited when the Lord does something only He can do through them. When God gets involved we can't help but be excited. These men saw God work because they were faithful to do what the Lord asked them to do.
What the disciples told Jesus coupled with what He said to them gives us a great picture of the Christian life. In the Christian life:
1. THERE IS JOY
17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, ''Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.''
The ''joy'' of the New Testament describes a calmness of spirit - of the inner person; cheerfulness despite the circumstances of life. Their joy came from seeing God do something they had never seen before. Even the demons were subject to them because of God's power. Demons may be able to resist us but they can never resist God's power.
We often feel lost in this fallen, sin ...
