Truths for Life's Hurricanes
Robert Dawson
1 Chronicles 29:11-12
Erwin Lutzer, pastor, theologian and author, in his book, Where was God, says as he watched the coverage of the 2005 earthquake in India, which claimed the lives of 80,000 people, he found himself asking, ''What kind of God would allow such a disaster to happen?'' This question was especially pointed because that earthquake occurred on the hills of a massive tsunami that swept through Thailand, Sri Lanka and other countries claiming the lives of close to 250,000 people, the largest natural disaster in modern history.
We all followed and saw pictures of the devastation that Harvey brought to Houston over the last weeks. Now we have been following with rapt attention the ongoing devastation of Irma that we are facing. Florida has evacuated close to or over a million people, many of whom have made their way through our little town.
As we sit here this morning, there are still uncertainties for everyone involved. There are questions that come to mind.
While we watch all this play out, people have those ''what if'' questions and scenarios running through their mind. In moments like this. there are other questions as well. Those questions are usually centered around one word, why. ''Why now? Why this? Why me?'' We could continue the litany of questions all involving some variation of that one little word, why.
- In times of personal or national tragedy, we may come out the other side and say here are things I learned about me, God and others. Here are good things that came out of this event. I saw God's hand here but despite these things we never fully have and answer to the question of why, at least not to the average person's satisfaction.
- These are questions that I, nor anyone else, no matter how well intentioned can fully answer. I wish I could but I can't.
I will not be able to fully supply those answers today or any day. I do, however, want us to consider some biblical truths ...
